The ruins of Šalek Castle in Velenje are the remains of the castle after which the settlement and the whole valley are named. The tower, which still stands today, is the oldest part of castle and has a triangular floor plan, which is unique feature in Slovenia and Europe. It was erected in 13thcentury.
