The ruins of Dobrna castle are still quite impressive. Presumably it was founded some years before 1275, when it is first mentioned in the papers of the time. Although it is not mentioned before 1275 it is not impossible that the possession of that time was bounded to Ranšperk.
In 1346 Eberhard from Dobrna pledged the castle to church and probably never bought it back as it becomes the property of Ptuj lords in 1438. In years that followed nothing special was going on, until 1666 when the owner Janez Matija Gačnik is raised to nobility. After that the castle is also known as Snake castle. In 1769 the building was bought by Franc Ksaverij Avguštin, the baron of Dienersberg. After three years, in 1772, he and his family had to escape as the building started to collapse one night as a result of years of neglect. After that the site is uninhabited. Today some of the gothic architecture is still preserved in the central part of the ruins. Before it collapsed the castle had a big hall, a chapel, big archive, cannons and arsenal.
