The castle is first mentioned in written sources on 29th September 895, when King Arnulf gave possession of Brestanica and Krško to Lord Valtun. The castle of Rajhenburg is the firsst medieval castle in Slovenia mentioned in written sources. It was demolished in fights with Hungarians at the beginning of the 10th century, and was rebuilt from 1131 to 1147 by the Bishop of Salzburg. The Bishop of Salzburg had a mint in the town and the castle was let out on lease. It had various owners over the centuries, and each of them gave the castle his own stamp. The family of Rajhenburg owned the castle from 1141 to 1570, when they becom died out. There is also a very interesting legend about the Rajhenburg family. The castle was given its present form during the ownership of the Gallenstein family in the 17th century. The Counts of Attenms were one of the most important owners, who beside the other castles in the Posavje owned also the Rajhenburg castle. In the 19th century, ownership of the castle changed many times, and in 1881, it was bought by Trappist monks from France, who transformed the castle into a monastery.
In 1941, the Germans exiled the monks and made the castle into a transit camp for the deportations of Slovenians. About 45.000 Slovenians went trought this camp on their way into exsile. There was a prison in the castle after the war but since 1968, the castle is being altered into a museum. The exhibition on Slovenian internees is the first museum wxhibition displayed in the castle. It was prepared by Dr. Tone Ferenc. Location: Štajerska -> Krško -> Brestanica |
